Candidates Below 16 Are Eligible for Admission – Conditions Apply in 2026
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has clarified that while the standard minimum age for admission into tertiary institutions remains 16 years, certain exceptional candidates below the age of 16 may still be considered under strict conditions.
This development aims to accommodate academically gifted students while maintaining academic standards and maturity requirements for university education.

JAMB’s Minimum Age Policy for Tertiary Admission
JAMB maintains that the minimum age for admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions is 16 years. Institutions are allowed to admit candidates who will turn 16 by August 31 of the admission year, provided they meet all academic requirements set by the institution.
The policy ensures that candidates possess the maturity needed for higher education while preserving fairness in the admission process.
However, the board recognizes that some students demonstrate exceptional academic abilities at an earlier age, prompting the introduction of a special consideration process.
Exception for Gifted Candidates Below 16
Although the general rule sets the minimum age at 16, JAMB allows exceptional under-16 candidates to be considered for admission.

To qualify, such candidates must demonstrate extraordinary academic performance, particularly in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
Key Requirement
- Candidates must score at least 80% in the UTME, equivalent to 320 out of 400.
Only candidates who meet this benchmark may proceed to further evaluation.
Additional Academic Requirements
Underage candidates must also meet additional academic standards to prove their readiness for tertiary education.
Required Conditions
- Minimum 80% in UTME (320/400 or higher)
- At least 80% in Post-UTME screening
- Strong performance in WAEC or NECO O’Level results
- Results must typically be obtained in a single sitting
- Subject combinations must align with the chosen course of study
These requirements are designed to ensure that only truly exceptional students benefit from the under-age admission provision.

Special Screening for Underage Candidates
Candidates below 16 who meet the academic threshold must undergo additional screening conducted by JAMB and participating institutions.
The screening process may include:
- Written assessments
- Academic evaluations
- Interviews with education experts
This rigorous process ensures that early admission is granted only to students who demonstrate both intellectual ability and academic maturity.
Why the Policy Exists
JAMB introduced these measures to strike a balance between academic opportunity and student readiness.
The board has also cautioned parents against altering birth records or falsifying ages in an attempt to secure early admission, noting that such actions can cause complications later, particularly during programs like the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Conclusion
While the minimum admission age remains 16, JAMB acknowledges that exceptional talent can appear earlier. For this reason, candidates below 16 may still be considered for admission—provided they demonstrate outstanding academic ability and successfully pass a rigorous screening process.
This policy ensures that gifted students are not unfairly excluded, while maintaining the academic integrity and maturity standards required for tertiary education.
