The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has been selected to host the 2026 Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA), with the sporting event scheduled to hold in August 2026 in Calabar, Cross River State.

The announcement was formally confirmed following the presentation of the NUGA hosting flag and the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement between the University of Calabar and the Nigerian University Games Association. The development positions UNICAL as the host of the 28th edition of the prestigious inter-university sports festival.
Thousands of student-athletes from universities across the country are expected to participate in the games, competing in various sporting disciplines. The event is aimed at promoting sports development, unity, and healthy competition among Nigerian youths in tertiary institutions.
The Cross River State Government will serve as the chief host, providing support to ensure adequate facilities, security, and logistics for a successful outing. The hosting of the games is also expected to boost tourism and economic activities within Calabar and its environs.
Stakeholders have expressed optimism that the 2026 NUGA Games will further enhance the sporting profile of the University of Calabar while reinforcing its reputation as a centre of academic and athletic excellence.
