The Nigeria Police have charged the driver involved in the fatal road accident that injured British former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua and claimed the lives of two of his close associates.

In a statement on Friday, the Ogun State Police Command said Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode (46) was arraigned before the Sagamu Magistrate Court over the crash, which occurred along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. Kayode was charged with causing death by dangerous driving, among other offences.
According to police sources, the defendant is facing four counts, including reckless and dangerous driving leading to loss of life. The case has been adjourned to January 20, 2026, for further hearing.
Kayode was granted bail in the sum of ₦5 million, with two sureties, but was remanded in custody pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions. Efforts to reach him or his legal representatives for comments were unsuccessful as of press time.
The accident occurred on Monday when the Lexus SUV conveying Joshua collided with another vehicle. The crash resulted in the death of Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, both close friends and members of Joshua’s team. Joshua, 36, sustained minor injuries and was taken to hospital for medical checks.
Preliminary investigations by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) indicated that excessive speed and an illegal overtaking manoeuvre may have caused the vehicle to crash into a stationary truck.
Joshua, who was born in the United Kingdom to Nigerian parents, is said to be in stable condition, according to his promoter, Matchroom Boxing.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed condolences to Joshua and the families of the deceased, describing the incident as a tragic accident.
The crash came just over a week after Joshua knocked out American social media personality Jake Paul in the sixth round of a bout in Miami. The boxing star is expected to face fellow Briton Tyson Fury later this year.
